Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Spatula or Wooden Spoon
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats preferably thick-cut
  • 2 cups water or milk for cooking oats
  • 2 small apples firm and sweet, peeled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter for caramelizing apples
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon adds warmth
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup optional, for extra sweetness
  • Pinch salt enhances flavors
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts e.g., walnuts or pecans, optional for topping

Instructions

  • Dice or thinly slice the apples and set aside. Measure out the oats and liquids, and prepare all ingredients nearby for quick assembly.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat until it begins to foam and smell nutty. Add the sliced apples and a pinch of salt, stirring gently.
  • Cook the apples, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden and start to soften, about 4-5 minutes. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the apples and stir to coat evenly.
  • Add honey or maple syrup to the apples if desired, cooking for another minute until the syrup thickens slightly and coats the fruit.
  • Meanwhile, in a separate pot, bring water or milk to a gentle boil and stir in the oats. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the oats are thick and creamy, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Once the oats are cooked and have a smooth, velvety texture, spoon them into bowls. Top with the warm caramelized apples, including their syrupy sauce.
  • Sprinkle chopped nuts over the top for added crunch and serve immediately while warm and fragrant. Enjoy the contrasting textures and cozy flavors!

Notes

Use firmer, sweeter apples for best caramelization. Feel free to adjust cinnamon and sweetener to your taste. Top with a dollop of yogurt or a drizzle of extra honey for variation.
