Equipment

  • Saucepan or large pot
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board

Ingredients

  • 3 cups fresh apple slices preferably Fuji or Honeycrisp
  • 2 cinnamon sticks cinnamon sticks whole for simmering
  • 2 cups apple cider unsweetened or sweetened as desired
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice to prevent browning and add brightness
  • to taste ground cinnamon for extra spice if desired

Instructions

  • Wash and core the apples, then slice them into thin, even pieces. Place them in a bowl and toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • Pour the apple cider into a large saucepan or pot and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat. You should hear a soft bubbling sound as it warms.
  • Add the cinnamon sticks to the simmering cider, allowing their warm aroma to start infusing the liquid.
  • Slide the sliced apples into the cider, spreading them out evenly in the liquid. They should start to sink and float gently as they absorb the flavors.
  • Reduce the heat to low, maintaining a gentle simmer. Cover the pot with a lid partially to trap the fragrant steam inside.
  • Let the mixture simmer gently for about 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The apples will become soft and the cider will take on a warm, spiced aroma.
  • If desired, sprinkle in some ground cinnamon to boost the spice aroma and stir gently to combine.
  • Once the apples are tender and the mixture is fragrant and bubbling, remove from heat. Discard the cinnamon sticks if you prefer a less intense spice flavor.
  • Pour the simmering potpourri into a decorative bowl or leave it on the stove for continued aromatic enjoyment. The soft apples and warm spice scent will fill your space with cozy fall vibes.

Notes

You can customize the aroma by adding cloves, orange slices, or a splash of vanilla extract during simmering for extra festive flair.
