Equipment

  • 1 Blender
  • 1 Shaker
  • 1 Glass

Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 6 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Optional: 3/4 cup dark rum bourbon, or brandy (for spiked eggnog)
  • Additional nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

  • In a large saucepan, heat the whole milk and heavy cream over medium heat until it reaches a gentle simmer. Do not boil.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and granulated sugar until light and frothy.
  • Slowly pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the bowl with the eggs and sugar, whisking constantly to temper the eggs and prevent them from curdling.
  • Gradually pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining hot milk mixture, whisking constantly to combine.
  • Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Do not let it boil.
  • Remove the eggnog from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and ground nutmeg. Optionally, stir in the dark rum, bourbon, or brandy for spiked eggnog. Transfer the eggnog to a pitcher or container and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight until thoroughly chilled.
  • Before serving, stir the eggnog well to reincorporate any separated ingredients. Pour into glasses or mugs and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg. Enjoy chilled.

Notes

  1. Alcohol Content: Adjust the amount of rum, bourbon, or brandy according to your preference for alcohol content. You can also omit the alcohol entirely for a non-alcoholic version of eggnog.
  2. Storage: Homemade eggnog can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Stir well before serving as it may separate during storage.
