Red, White, and Blue Celebration Cookies/July 4th Event

Of all the summer holidays, the 4th of July is one of my favorites! Usually we are do a lot of swimming and boating, and of course, eating, as we celebrate throughout the day. All that is followed by beautiful city wide fireworks, which are always the perfect way to end the day, and of course, more food! How do you celebrate the 4th?

Did I mention we do quite a bit of eating?! This year we will be enjoying the holiday with a picnic table full of food, something on the grill, and desserts waiting in the fridge. I will be serving these 4th of July Patriotic Sugar Cookies as part of our dessert tray. These cookies are easy to make and decorate and they are fun to eat too!

Red, White, and Blue Celebration Cookies

(printable recipe at end of page)

(makes 5-6 dozen cookies)

2 cups Butter (softened)

2 cups Sugar

2 Eggs

2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

1 teaspoon Salt

5 cups Flour

3 teaspoon Baking Powder

Royal Icing Recipe

3/4 cup Warm Water

5 tbl. Meringue Powder

1 teaspoon Cream of Tartar

2.25 lbs Powdered Icing Sugar

Red and Blue Food Coloring

Red Icing Color

Blue Icing Color

Cookie Toppings

white confetti sprinkles

red, white and blue sprinkles

chocolate candy pearls

red, white and blue stars

mini decor balls

mini red, white and blue sprinkles

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and extract and mix well. Mix dry ingredients together. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, a little at a time. Mix until flour mix is incorporated and dough comes together.

Divide dough into small batches that will fit between a large piece of parchment paper. Roll out dough to desired thickness. This recipe will take approx. 6-7 pieces of parchment paper. Stack the parchment paper covering the cookie dough on to a baking sheet, cover tightly with saran wrap, and let it chill in the fridge. Repeat the process until all dough is used, and all the sheets of parchment are in the fridge. By the time you are done, the first sheet you put in should be cold. If not, wait about 30 minutes.

Take out the first sheet, cut out, and start baking at 350 degrees for  8-10 minutes. The best thing is that you are not adding any additional flour to your cookies. When you have used all of the dough from one sheet that you can, re-roll it and place on the same parchment paper again. Refrigerate like when you started. Keep cooking until all cookies are done.

Let cookies cool on cooling rack.

Use a whisk to mix together the warm water and meringue powder in a large mixing bowl or stand mixer. Mix for 30 seconds. Add Cream of Tartar and mix for 30 seconds more. Add confectioner's sugar and mix for 10 minutes on low speed.

Take 1 cup of frosting and put it into a small bowl. Tint the icing red.
Take another cup of frosting and put it into another small bowl, and tint it blue.

Using the white frosting, outline the cookie with a #2 decorating tip
then fill in the inside of the star. Use a toothpick to move the icing around to fill in the star. Don't allow the cookies to dry. You need them wet so the fireworks can be made and the candies can be attached.

To make the fireworks on the cookies, place a dot of blue frosting
on the wet cookie.

Use a toothpick to pull the blue frosting into a firework. Do the same with a dot of red frosting. The fireworks make a great background for all the sprinkles.

Begin decorating the cookie with all the edible candies. Put them in any design that you like. Get creative and make it fun! I used an assortment of candies such as white confetti sprinkles, chocolately pearls, red, white and blue stars, mini decor balls, and or course, sprinkles! The sprinkles that are large make great decor for these cookies!

Star Spangled Cookies / #SundaySupper

Happy 4th of July to you all! I love celebrating the 4th, don't you? I love the reason for the party, the red, white and blue colors, the yummy BBQ atmosphere, the parades, the fun! So today I made some Star Spangled Cookies to celebrate! I used a basic sugar cookie recipe that I have been using for years, but I added a little twist to these cookies. I sprinkled the icing, both in the cookie and on top of the cookie with pop rocks!
At first it gave the cookies that little pop that you get when you use pop rocks, but once the cookies sat for a few hours, the moisture from the frosting dampened the pop rocks. So, there was a little pop from the rocks, but not what I expected. Next time I make these I will only add the pop rocks to the drizzled frosting on the top of the cookies. If I add them right before I serve them, the pop rocks will give that fun pop I was looking for!

Red, White and Blue Star Cookies!

For this weeks Cookie Journey Thursday, we are making star cookies! Red, White and Blue ones! These cookies are simple, don't take all that much time, and oh, so pretty. They will make any table look festive and happy!
Red, White and Blue Star Cookies
I used the No Fail Sugar Cookies recipe, and
Antonia74 for the icing. You can find both
of the recipes here.
Americolor Holiday Red
Americolor Royal Blue
I made 1 small, 1 medium, and 1 large star cookie
for each person attending the party I made these for.
Some will eat more, some less!
Outline your blue cookies.....
and fill in.
Do the same....
for the red cookies....
and once more....
for the white ones.
Let them dry completely.
I let these dry overnight.
Pipe small dots on the star. Use contrasting colors so that
you get the Red, White and Blue effect throughout your
cookies. Pipe the dots in the same place on each cookie.
Use blue dots on the white cookie at each angle.
Then place the red dots on the white cookie in
between the blue dots.
Do the same dot design on the blue cookies, using
red and white icing.
Do the design one more time on the red cookies,
using blue and white icing.
Happy 4th of July!

Stay tuned for Day 10
of
15 Days of Red White and Blue!

Thanks for stopping by!

Baby Cookies on Cookie Journey Thursday

Thanks for joining me for Cookie Journey Thursday! My son's friend had a baby girl recently, and he asked me if I would send some cookies to celebrate this special occasion. Well, you know I said yes! This is what I made.
Whenever I make cookies as a gift, I like to send the cookies in something the recipient can use.

I found this pink basket and matched up some pretty receiving blankets to put in the basket. The blankets also gave me a color scheme to use. I just love the light and dark pink with a little light green. I made the icing  that I always use, and I colored some of it light pink using Americolor #132, some darker pink, using Americolor #164, and the rest light green using very little Wilton Willow Green.

The Bib:

Outline the bib with the light pink.
Immediately fill in.
Let dry completely.
I am not happy with the way there is a distinction
between the outlining and the fill. At first I thought it might be
because I live in a very dry climate, but after checking into it more,
I think it was because I did not make the icing thin enough.
Using a #2 tip and the light green, I randomly piped
some mini petals on the bib. I just made four very short
lines in the pattern shown.
Then using a #2 tip, and some dark pink, I piped small little dots
in the middle of each one.

The Rattle:
Pipe and fill in the top ball and the bottom ball on the rattle.
I decorated this rattle several times before I was happy with it.
I thought I had more pics of the work in progress on the rattle,
so I apologize. I piped and filled in the light green areas.
Then I piped and filled in the light pink center.
When it was completely dry, I piped a little scroll design,
and added the two dark pink dots.
I thought the top ball needed something, so I piped the same scroll
design on it, and added the two side dots.

The Onesie:
I piped and filled in the onesie with light green.
I let it completely dry, then I piped along the design of a onesie.
I wasn't too sure what design to use, so I looked through
lots of outlined onesie cookies online, and found one I liked.
I followed the design along the edges of the onesie, then I went
back and piped on the extra, like at the neck and the sleeve.
After everything was dry, I put little dots on the onesie
in light pink and dark pink.

The Bottle:
I outlined and filled in the base of the bottle.
Let dry completely.
I tried several ways to decorate the band that goes
across the bottle, but I wanted something with a
little texture. So, I took the light green, and I squiggled
across the band area, and then I squiggled back across it.
I think it added just the right amount of dimension.
I piped and filled in the nipple part of the bottle with
dark pink.
I finished the baby bottle by adding
a design like on the bib, only
bigger. I still used the #2 tip,
but when I piped out the light green,
I pushed a little more icing thru the
tip, making the piping thicker.

The Monogram:
Pipe and the fill in the circle cookies.
I added the initials of the baby in light pink and the
little heart, like I made here.
After all the cookies were dry, I dropped them in little cello
bags and tied coordinating curly ribbon around the bags.
Don't they look festive?
I unfolded each of the receiving blankets, and bunched them
together in the bottom of the basket, then I covered
the blankets with the cookies.  I added a little card
and sent them on their way.

What do I need to work on?
I need to work on my icing consistency and my
outlining. Circles are a problem for me.

What do you think?
Thanks for joining me today.

Next week I am making cookies for my son.
He will need the nourishment for finals!!
Hope to see you soon!
