- 12 mini Milano cookies any flavor
- 24 square pretzels Snaps
- ½ –¾ cup chocolate buttercream frosting enough for piping and assembly
- ½ cup crushed Oreo cookie crumbs
- 12 candy bones halved to make 24 pieces
Prepare the Cookie Tombstones
Place the Milano cookies on a cutting board. Using a serrated knife, carefully cut each cookie in half with a slow sawing motion to prevent breakage. Each half will become a tombstone for one graveyard bite.
Set the cookie halves aside on a plate.
Prepare the Candy Bones
Using the serrated knife, carefully cut each candy bone in half. You will need one half-bone for each graveyard bite.
Set the pieces aside until you're ready to assemble the decorations.
Decorate the Tombstones
Transfer some chocolate buttercream frosting to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip, or use a zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped off.
Pipe the letters “RIP” onto each Milano cookie half. Place the decorated cookie pieces on a flat surface and allow the frosting to dry enough to hold the lettering in place.
Attach the Tombstones to the Pretzels
Pipe chocolate buttercream around the edges of each square pretzel, concentrating on the three-hole side where the cookie tombstone will be attached.
Immediately press a decorated Milano cookie half into the frosting so it stands upright like a grave marker. Hold it briefly if needed, then leave it undisturbed until the frosting sets.
Add the Graveyard Details
Pipe more chocolate buttercream over the flat areas of each pretzel, covering the surface where the crushed Oreo crumbs will sit.
While the frosting is still wet, place one half of a candy bone at an angle on the pretzel base. Position it so the bone appears to be emerging from the graveyard soil.
Add the Chocolate Cookie Crumbs
Spoon crushed Oreo crumbs over the buttercream, covering the base and the candy bone to create the look of freshly disturbed graveyard soil.
Gently shake off any excess crumbs. If any areas need more coverage, pipe a little additional buttercream onto those spots and sprinkle on more Oreo crumbs.
For a more realistic effect, add a small dab of frosting to any exposed part of the candy bone and cover it with additional crumbs.
- Cookie choice: Mini Milano cookies work well because their shape resembles small tombstones. Choose your favorite flavor, provided the cookies are sturdy enough to cut in half.
- Cut carefully: Use a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion to reduce breakage. Keep a few extra cookies on hand in case any split unevenly.
- Frosting consistency: Use buttercream that is firm enough to hold the cookie tombstones upright but soft enough to pipe easily. If the frosting is too warm, chill it briefly before assembling.
- Oreo crumbs: Crush the cookies into fine crumbs for a realistic soil-like appearance. You can include the cream filling or use chocolate cookie crumbs alone.
- Candy bones: If you cannot find candy bones, small white candy pieces shaped like bones make a suitable alternative.
